Advanced Prompt Engineering Techniques That Actually Work

March 25, 2026

Beyond Basic Prompting

Most people learn one or two prompt techniques and stick with them. Advanced prompt engineering means knowing which technique to reach for depending on the task, and combining them for even better results.

Chain of Thought Prompting

Chain of thought prompting asks the AI to show its reasoning before giving a final answer. This significantly improves accuracy on complex or multi-step tasks.

Basic version: Add "Think step by step" to any prompt.

Advanced version: "Before answering, break the problem into its components, consider each one separately, then synthesise your reasoning into a final recommendation."

Best for: Analysis, problem-solving, decision-making, anything where the reasoning process matters as much as the answer.

Meta-Prompting

Meta-prompting means asking the AI to help you write a better prompt. You describe what you want to achieve, and the AI generates an optimised prompt for that goal.

Example: "I want to get better outputs when asking AI to write marketing copy. Write me an optimised prompt template for this task that I can reuse."

Prompt Chaining

Rather than asking for everything in one giant prompt, break complex tasks into a series of smaller prompts where each output feeds into the next.

Step 1: "Research the top 5 objections customers have when buying [PRODUCT TYPE]."

Step 2: "Based on these objections: [PASTE OUTPUT], write email responses that address each one."

Step 3: "Combine the strongest elements from these emails into a single objection-handling FAQ page."

Temperature and Tone Control

Even without adjusting technical settings, you can influence the creativity and tone of outputs through your prompts.

For more creative outputs: "Give me an unexpected, unconventional take on this. Avoid the obvious."

For more conservative outputs: "Stick to established best practices. Do not speculate."

Negative Prompting

Tell the AI what not to do. This is often more effective than describing what you want.

"Write a LinkedIn post about [TOPIC]. Do not use buzzwords like synergy, leverage, or disruptive. Do not start with a question. Do not use a numbered list."

Persona Stacking

Combine multiple roles for nuanced outputs.

"You are both a data scientist and a marketing strategist. Analyse this campaign data from both perspectives: [DATA]."

Conclusion

Advanced prompt engineering is about precision and intent. The more clearly you can communicate what you want, the better every AI tool performs. Explore prompt templates at CopyPrompt.io.
