Write a Scene With Rising Tension

Write a scene (400–600 words) that builds sustained tension without relying on action or violence.

Scene setup:
- Characters: [describe 2–3 people and their relationships]
- Location: [specific, sensory setting]
- What each character wants: [their immediate goal in this scene]
- What is at stake: [what could be lost]
- The source of tension: [e.g. an unspoken secret / a power imbalance / an approaching deadline / a lie about to unravel]

Techniques to employ:
- Use silence, pauses, and what goes unsaid as much as what is spoken
- Ground the reader in physical sensation — what the POV character notices, how their body responds
- Let tension build through small, specific details rather than exposition
- Include at least one moment where the tension almost breaks — then tighten again
- End the scene before the explosion: leave the reader holding their breath

Avoid: characters explaining their feelings, melodramatic internal monologue, and sudden dramatic reveals that haven't been earned.
